Bee Weiss Live Interactive Experience

Learn about the bees through this live interactive experience!

Students will be amazed as they develop an understanding of bees particularly the ‘European Honeybee’, beekeeping, pollination in our ecosystem, sustainability and ‘living with bees’.

Description

Bee Weiss is a Beehive and Bee Activity Management Service, specialising in European Honey Bees.

The live interactive experience is held via online video chat that can be enjoyed from the classroom.

Students will be amazed as they develop an understanding of bees particularly the ‘European Honeybee’, beekeeping, pollination in our ecosystem, sustainability and ‘living with bees’.

The live workshops includes:

  • A demonstration of bee keeping equipment including bee suit with veil and the ‘smoker’.
  • Bee safety and how not to get stung.
  • Viewing different parts of the hive including the brood (nursery) boxes and the honey ‘super’.
  • Learn about the Queen excluder and purpose.
  • Facts behind the sizing of the grill used to keep the Queen in the ‘brood boxes’ without any brood getting mixed with the honey.
  • Live close up of the bees showing them carrying pollen back to the hive.
  • Bees doing their ‘bee dance’.

Curriculum and Syllabuses

Year 3 – Biological Sciences

Living things can be grouped on the basis of observable features and can be distinguished from non-living things (ACSSU044):

  • Recognising characteristics of living things such as growing, moving, sensitivity and reproducing.
  • Recognising the range of different living things.
  • Exploring differences between living, once living and products of living things.

Year 4Biological Sciences

Living things have life cycles (ACSSU072):

  • Making and recording observations of living things as they develop through their life cycles.
  • Describing the stages of life cycles of different living things such as insects, birds, frogs and flowering plants.
  • Comparing life cycles of animals and plants.
  • Recognising that environmental factors can affect life cycles such as fire and seed germination.

Living things, depend on each other and the environment to survive (ACSSU073):

  • Investigating how plants, provide shelter for animals.
  • Investigating the roles of living things in a habitat, for instance producers, consumers or decomposers.
  • Recognising that interactions between living things may be competitive or mutually beneficial.

Facilitator Profile

Rob Weiss is a registered Beekeeper with the Department of Primary Industries and has been a beekeeper for 6 years.  Rob currently has 7 beehives on his property and sells his fresh honey when in season.

Rob assists many clients set up, maintain and, mentor their very own beehives.

Rob has been working with children as a sports trainer and other vocations for the past 15 years.  He also is a personal fitness trainer and operates a laser tag business.
