Indigenous Dance Off

Karl will have the students dancing up a storm when he amps up the Yidaki (Didgeridoo). Kids will learn to dance the Emu, the Roo and the Brolga.

Everyone will have their faces painted in ochre for the occasion and listen to wonderful Dreamtime stories of a truly ancient people.

Originating from the vast Wiradjuri Nation of New South Wales, Karl Wickey is extremely proud of his ancient connection to the Land.

Karl is an Indigenous Educator as well as musician and loves to teach his culture through playing his Yidaki (Didgeridoo) and telling stories of the Dreamtime.

  • The diversity of Australia’s first people and the long continuous connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Peoples to Country/Place (land, sea, waterways and skies). (ACHASSK083)
  • The representation of Australia as states and territories and as Countries/Places of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and major places in Australia, both natural and human. (ACHASSK066)
  • The importance of environments, including natural vegetation, to animals and people (ACHASSK088)

Years 5-6

  • Examining the narrative voice in texts from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions, which include perspectives of animals and spirits, about how we should care for the Earth (ACELT1610)
  • Investigating the qualities of contemporary protest songs, for example those about Indigenous peoples and those about the environment (ACELT1611)
