Indigenous Waterways

Sydney & Surrounds

In this hands-on workshop, children discover Aboriginal water knowledge, including how waterways were used for travel, fishing, and the life found in freshwater and the sea. They learn about traditional Aboriginal canoes, made from strong, durable materials suited to local waterways, and experiment with lightweight natural materials to explore floating, balance, and design.

Each child will get to take their mini boat home as a keepsake of their learning.

This activity blends science, creativity, and Aboriginal water knowledge in a fun, age-appropriate, and respectful way.

Highlights

  • Make a mini canoe using eucalyptus twigs and paperbark
  • Explore how shape, weight, and balance affect how boats float
  • Test and adjust boats on water to improve their performance
  • Discover traditional fishing techniques and ways to care for waterway
