Every August, National Science Week gives us a chance to pause and appreciate the role science plays in our lives — not just in laboratories and research centres, but in the everyday questions kids ask about the world around them. This year, from August 9 to 17, schools, educators, and vacation care programs across Australia will be celebrating the theme of science, curiosity, and discovery.

Learning by Doing: Why It Matters
The best science learning doesn’t always happen from a textbook — it happens when children touch, test, build, break, rebuild, and ask “what if?” That’s why hands-on science experiences can be so impactful, especially for younger students. Whether they’re engineering their own structures in a creative Buildtopia session or stepping into a pop-up Planetarium to explore the cosmos, kids are not just learning facts — they’re thinking like scientists.
During National Science Week, we’ve seen how powerful it can be to give children experiences that connect classroom learning to the real world. Activities that explore Earth’s natural forces, like Dynamic Earth, or the formation of rocks and minerals in Earth Science can shift a child’s thinking from passive learning to active discovery.
Science, Creativity & Imagination
One of the most beautiful things about science is that it’s deeply creative. We often think of creativity as belonging to the arts — painting, drawing, storytelling — but science asks us to imagine possibilities, to see invisible forces at work, and to design solutions that haven’t existed before.
Programs like GeoExplorers, where kids investigate what lies beneath the surface of our planet, or our All-Day Stellar Science experience, which offers a rotating lineup of engaging experiments, don’t just teach science — they encourage inventiveness, resilience, and problem-solving. These are skills that reach far beyond National Science Week and far beyond the classroom.
